Within a week of the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010, CitiHope International staff and volunteers had already packed and sent an initial shipment of much needed medicines and medical supplies, including anesthesia, antibiotics, and casting materials.  CitiHope’s longstanding presence in the Dominican Republic placed CHI in a strategic position to respond to the Haitian earthquake.  CitiHope Caribbean Director Tim Tuccelli coordinated the delivery of supplies through Barahona Airport in the Dominican Republic.  Channeling medical relief through Barahona enabled CitiHope to rapidly deliver supplies to Le Bon Samaritan Hospital in Jimani, Dominican Republic, a border town where thousands of Haitian earthquake victims received treatment.  Within two weeks of the earthquake, $500,000 in emergency medical relief was in the hands of doctors in Jimani.

From January 12-April 30, 2010, CitiHope, in partnership with the World Children’s Fund, Medical Mission International, Our Children’s Earth Foundation, Global Environment Technology & Foundation, the Chadasha Foundation, Pilatus Owners and Pilots Association, Le Bon Samaritan Hospital, Hopital Albert Schweitzer, and Stop Hunger Now, delivered $4.8 million in medicine, food, and supplies to 4 central hospitals, 2 district hospitals, 1 mission hospital, and several rural clinics through its Hope for Haiti outreach.

To date, CitiHope's Hope for Haiti program has reached an estimated 10,000 earthquake survivors.

In addition to medical relief, food aid has formed an integral part of CitiHope’s ongoing work with Haitian earthquake survivors, both in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic.  Working in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, CitiHope has to date distributed 142,560 nutritious meals to hospitals, orphanages, foster care centers, schools and villages across the island of Hispaniola.

Through its Hope for Haiti initiative, CitiHope has established strong relationships with local NGOs, secured rapid customs clearance, and begun working in accordance with Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population guidelines.  Stay tuned for more on CitiHope’s work with Hopital Albert Schweitzer to develop an effective countrywide medical supply chain and to empower Haitians to help Haiti recover!
