Food Relief Arrives in Somaliland

Updated: May 21, 2022

Five containers (93.8 metric tons) of Harvest Lentil Pro®, a shelf-stable fortified lentil-vegetable soup mix produced by Breedlove Foods, have arrived in Somaliland. CitiHope and our partners, Edna Adan University Hospital (EAUH) are delivering this food to primary schools, maternal and child health centers, hospitals, and orphanages in Somaliland through USAID's International Food Relief Partnership (IFRP) program.

After years of failed rainy seasons and drought, damage to crops from flooding and desert locust infestations, and the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, many parts of Somaliland are experiencing food insecurity. This IFRP program, CitiHope's fifth in Somaliland since 2017, will provide nutritional support to approximately 17,865 people, with a focus on pregnant and nursing mothers and young children, who are especially vulnerable during times of drought.

Since 2017, CitiHope and Edna Adan University Hospital (EAUH) have distributed 337.68 kg of Harvest Lentil Pro® to schools, hospitals, and health centers throughout Somaliland, reaching over 71,000 people. The food product is delicious and nutritious for all ages, and conforms to the Islamic halal dietary laws observed by the people of Somaliland. The program has been welcomed and well received, and distribution of the five new containers has begun in May 2022.
